Mute Swan Cygnus olor

The Mute Swan is a common breeding bird distributed over most of south Sweden. In winter it is wide-spread along the coasts of south Sweden both along the open coasts of the southernmost provinces but also in the archipelagos as long as there are open areas with suitable depth for feeding swans. In cold winters marked concentrations of wintering swans are found along the open coasts of the southern part of the country. In the mild winter of 2015 large numbers of Mute Swans were distributed all over the archipelagos far out to the outer skerries. The winter population along the coasts was estimated to be about 50,000 individuals at the country-wide survey  in January 2015.

The loing-term indices for the Mute Swan both for September and January show significantly increasing trends. In January the indices for the last ten years mererly showed fluctuations, probably related to the hardness of the winters.
