Heron Ardea cinerea
The Heron is well-spread on the counting sites along the
coasts of Sweden. During the midwinter counts between 400 and 1000
herons have been counted on the index sites. Long-term indices show increasing trends for both September and January. During the last ten years the September increased whereas the January indices mererly showed fluctuations, whereas January indices decreased, most probably an effect of some cold winters. A marked decrease was noted at the hard winters 2010 and 2011, but the wintering numbers increased again. Ath the two country-wide surveys in 2004 and 2015 495 and 606 herons were counted. The speices was wide-spread over southern Sweden in winter.
